Environmental Impact
One of the biggest selling points of our holidays is the beautiful surroundings we can take you to. Many of these destinations are not accessible except by sea and so have a unique, unspoilt charm.
At Bayan Blue, we are keen to promote responsible tourism, by running low-impact holidays in tune with the local environment. Sailing is an inherently eco-friendly sport, as our power comes from the wind. However, air travel to and from the yacht and the small amount of diesel consumed during the week do contribute to global warming.
Bayan Blue has teamed up with Climate Care to enable our guests to offset the CO2 produced during the holiday, making it climate neutral. This means that the CO2 emissions from your share of the flight - and the diesel burnt aboard Bayan Blue during your holiday - will be offset by reducing an equivalent amount of CO2 emissions elsewhere.
The contribution required per person for a holiday with Bayan Blue is as follows:
| Return flight (from/to UK): | £4.00 |
| Diesel burnt aboard yacht during holiday: | £1.00 |
| Total (per person): | £5.00 |
| Offsetting your CO2 emissions is entirely voluntary and all guests are able to opt out while booking their holiday. All offsetting funds collected by Bayan Blue Ltd. are transferred in full to Climate Care. |
With the funds collected through this scheme, Climate Care develops projects across the world to avoid, reduce or absorb greenhouse gases through:
- Renewable Energy - Cutting out the need for fossil fuels.
- Energy Efficiency - Using less energy to do the same work.
- Forest Restoration - Absorbing and storing CO2 from the atmosphere.
Each of Climate Care's projects is monitored by a third party to verify that the emissions reductions they claim to achieve are being made. Climate Care is also advised by an Environmental Steering Committee whose members include environmental organisations such as WWF.
Climate Care will only fund projects to make CO2 emission reductions that would not have occurred without their intervention. Climate Care's projects include the following:
Energy Efficiency in South Africa:
Climate Care has started a programme of installing low energy lighting in low income households in South Africa. The lamps will be going to new communities built for the poorest households. Not only will the lamps reduce carbon dioxide emissions from local power stations, they will also reduce household electricity bills.
Renewable power for schools in India:
Climate Care is funding a project to introduce school stoves that run off a new renewable fuel source, replacing stoves that use fossil fuel LPG. Crop waste is being used to make biomass briquettes for the stoves, providing an extra income to farmers. For the schools this is good news because the new renewable fuel is cheaper. The stove has also proved popular with pupils, who prefer the taste of the food!
Forest Restoration in Uganda:
Climate Care is contributing to a forest restoration programme in the Kibale National Park in Uganda. The project aims to re-create a rainforest canopy by planting and managing 30 species of local trees. The area is an important wildlife habitat and the project also provides employment for local communities.
